December 10, 2001. Apologies to all who have been checking back periodically, but seeing no changes. I've been working on another Civil-War-related project these past few months and have had little time to devote to the 45th OVI site.
Also, the Logan County Historical Society's publication this April of Henry M. Cline's Life In Rebel Prisons put a sort of period on my own efforts to bring the history of the 45th to the attention of a wider audience. The book, in loose-leaf notebook form, contains the 40-part series of articles that Cline wrote for the Logan County Index from September 3, 1884 to June 24, 1885 about his experiences in Andersonville and other rebel prisons. I have excepted several of these articles for the site, but the entire series is worth reading for the insights it gives into not only prison life, but the men of the 45th. Though not a professional writer, Cline was a survivor of one of the most harrowing experiences of the war, who seemingly forgot nothing and wrote with frankness, clarity and humor. Life In Rebel Prisons is a must-read for Civil War prison buffs, even those who think they know everything about Andersonville. Cline may surprise you. You can order a copy at The Logan County Historical Society Web site or buy one at the Society's office at 521 E. Columbus Ave., Bellefontaine, Ohio.
One item of news: the 45th OVI site has recently been given the Union Site of Distinction award by James Stump, a Webmaster of several fine CW sites who has also honored the site with his Cavalry Award of Excellence Gold. As Mr. Stump explains:
"This award can not be submitted for it is given only on my opinion of the site. I use many criteria for doing so. The historical value of the site, the esthetics and of course navigation. I know it is only my opinion but I would like to honor sites that distinguish themselves on behalf of the Civil War web community. Your site offers so much in the way of information on the 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, not only facts about the unit, but the personal aspect with the letters and bios. You have truly done some magnificent work here and I would like to honor that."
Thanks to all of you who have made the site what it is!
